a critical loss of civility

One of the most astonishing things that's happened since 01/20/09 is the disappearance of civility in political discourse & even government.

It was an intended slap in the new president's face for core GOP leaders to meet on the very night of his inauguration to strategize ways to block any legislation coming from the Obama White House.

Then came Joe Wilson's pointing at the president during an address to a joint session of Congress & audibly saying, "You lie!" - twice.

During the 2010 State of the Union, Justice Alito clearly shook his head during the president's comments.  Chief Justice Roberts said it was very difficult for SCOTUS to sit expressionless during a speech while their Citizens United ruling was being criticized from the podium.

Two months later, John Boehner yelled, "Hell no, you can't!" on the floor of the House of Representatives.

Now, even the normally civil Jeb Bush is vowing, "You're damn right I'm going to fight back!" over cracks & criticism from Donald Trump.

How weird is it that the party which in my earlier life was famous for its decorum & civility - at least in public - has become the party my mother would have sent to bed after washing its mouth out with soap.

In my political lifetime, we've gone from

...this                   ...to this
as a culture arbiter!
