An online news magazine has the headline, "Rob Reiner shames the media for coddling 'lunatic' Trump, and Morning Joe loses its mind." And it was spot on. The clip shows an "I'm mad as hell & I'm not going to take it anymore" Reiner speaking truth to the powerless. Joe & Mika stood in for a media that seems slack-jawed, dim-witted & struck dumb in the presence of Donald J. Trump.
Even Mika was excusing their lame treatment of the GOP's presumptive candidate. "But what are we supposed to do if he just talks in circles around us?" Seriously - she said that in own defense of why America's press corps seem to give Trump a pass on his outrageous statements. Rob didn't say it, but I will - "Stop asking him back & taking his calls. Stop giving him your imprimatur of credibility."
Their discomfort when Rob was holding their feet to the fire was nothin' compared to their freak-out when he said that Trump's campaign laid bare racism in America. Can't remember if it was Joe or Mika who said, in utter naked raw disbelief, "I can't believe you're going there." It was definitely Joe who countered that Trump's supporters are part of a working class done dirt by a BOP who promised big & delivered little - no racists here, just Americans who feel stiffed by their party.
The first thing humans do when their backs are to the wall, when they feel like they've been done dirt, is to look for Some Other to blame. The GOP's infamous Southern Strategy was based on appealing to covert & overt racism. Donald Trump made it legitimate & the collective media buries its collective head in the sand rather than face the ugly truth the 4th estate is supposed to dig up & expose.
