home to roost

Been pondering Speaker Ryan's comment that the GOP "does not prey on people’s prejudices."  One has to wonder what planet he's been on for the past eight years.  The GOP, subtly & not-so-subtly, has been ALL about that very thing.  Did they really think that their base really bought the leadership's vehement denials of racial animosity after they swore, on the very night of his inauguration, to trash any legislation from the Obama White House?  Do they think their voter base is that dumb not to know what was afoot?

Well, their chickens are coming home to roost.  After eight years of having to stomach the media & the GOP using false equivalency to say that Dems are as bad as Republicans, the fact can no longer be side stepped - conservatives have nurtured a hot bed of hatred & emotion that evolved into people who are all in for the things they've been nurtured to respect.  Nativism, hatred of others, a sense that only their kind are true patriots who love America.

It's shocking, but not surprising.  One must take great care when unleashing the dogs of hatred, condemnation, preening patriotism.  Out of control, they can tear apart the very handlers who trained them.

Conservatives can chirp platitudes like "the party does not prey on people’s prejudices" until the sun don't shine; their base knows better.  Take a peek at Donald Trump's Super Tuesday victories, at his margins of victory.  The leadership might not own it, Fox News might deny it, but the GOP base has taken eight years of being fed animosity & prejudice to heart.  And the chickens are coming home to roost.
